HORSE RACING BETTING AT MOUNTBET
Horse racing is where sports betting all started and it is the go-to-market for many of the biggest sports sites in the world. It used to be that you could only place your horse bets if you made your way over to the horse racing tracks. Then, bookmakers started popping up on local street corners. Now, you can bet on horse racing wherever you are, whenever you like with the advent of online horse racing betting. Here at Mountbet, whether you want to bet on the Cheltenham Festival or the Melbourne Cup, we have a vast number of betting markets on all the major races of the horse racing season.
Betting on the horses is now as much of a tradition as the sport itself – and, just behind football, is one of the most popular sports betting markets in the world. Because of this, there is so much choice and so many decisions to make when picking your bets, that it can be daunting. But here at Mountbet, we want to make it easier for you. We want to offer our customers value horse racing betting odds for all of the major markets along with all the information you need on a race meeting so that you can place your bets armed with as much information as you need!
UNDERSTANDING HORSE RACING ODDS
Before you start betting on the horses, it’s vital to understand horse racing odds, including each-way odds, starting price, multiples etc. Ultimately, understanding the odds helps you to understand how much you stand to win if your horse comes in – and the probability you have of that happening.
There are three popular ways of displaying horse racing betting odds – fractional, decimal and Moneyline. However, the most popular format across the world is decimal and that’s what we use here at Mountbet. Of all the different formats, decimal is the easiest to use and the most universal, accessible to customers all over the world. So, for example, you may pick a horse that has odds of 6.0. A $/£10 bet would simply be multiplied by the decimal number (6.0) to show that your return would be $/£60.
There may be times when horse racing odds don’t look quite as clear as this – but even if you can’t work out your possible return simply place your bet and stake onto your betslip and we will calculate the return for you!
LAY BETTING ODDS
The great thing about betting on horses here at Mountbet is that we don’t just offer odds on horses winning, we also give you the chance to ‘lay’ a bet – which means that you are betting on the horse not to win. This is what makes us, as a betting exchange, stand out from standard fixed odds betting sites. You can pick a horse that you don’t think will win and you will then take on the role of the bookmaker. You are effectively betting against the outcome. If the horse you lay loses, then you will win the backer’s stake. However, it’s worth noting that if the horse wins, you will have to pay out the winnings – the liability. For example, if you lay a horse at 6.0 odds and the bettor has placed a bet of £/$20, then if the horse loses, you will win the £/$20 stake. However, if the horse wins, then you will be liable to pay the winnings out – 6.0 x 20 – (original stake) = £/$100.
We offer lay betting on some of the biggest horse races in the world, although we cannot offer it on UK and Ireland horse racing events.
BETTING ON THE GRAND NATIONAL
One of the biggest horse races in the sporting calendar is the Grand National, UK, which attracts punters from all across the world.
The Grand National was first raced back in 1839 and is still one of the most famous global horse races to this day. Every year, the race takes place at Aintree Racecourse and is run over four miles and 2.5 furlongs. This steeplechase race consists of two laps and 30 fences. This makes it the longest National Hunt race in Great Britain. Because of the length of the race and the number of hurdles, this is considered to be the ‘ultimate test’ of both the horse and the jockey as they negotiate some of the most famously difficult fences such as the Canal Turn, Valentine’s Brook and Becher’s Brook. It attracts more than 600 million viewers from around 140 different countries – and many of these will look to place a bet on which horse will conquer the course the quickest.
