A controversial question asked by football fans and football bettors from all over the globe – who is the best football player in the world right now? There will never be full agreement – with everyone having their own opinion on the subject.
It’s usually Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo who are the two players most revered in the sport. However, their places at the top are under threat by the next generation of top ballplayers.

5: ERLING HAALAND – BORUSSIA DORTMUND
He may be in 5th spot now, but this is a player that has the potential to be number one in the future.
He has been incredible since first exploding onto the scene and has caught the eye of all the top teams. He was incredible in Red Bull Salzburg and is running rings around the Bundesliga as a Borussia Dortmund player.
Standing at 6ft 4, he is a powerhouse – and this is shown in his stats. In the two and a half seasons between 2019 and 2022, he has powered home 72 goals from 71 league games.
4: MO SALAH – LIVERPOOL
Some might have placed him higher up – and there may well be valid points for this given that right now, he is probably rightfully at number 2 in the world – but we have taken other factors into account here.
Salah is an effective player – and it’s hard to rival him in terms of picking up the ball out wide – and driving across or into the box at breakneck speed… if not scoring, then certainly creating set-piece opportunities.
Liverpool fans love Salah – and he will definitely go down as one of the team’s best players in history.
3: KEVIN DE BRUYNE – MANCHESTER CITY
If we are looking at form right now, he should be sitting behind Salah. However, if we look at the complete package… technical ability, skill-set, mental toughness and overall physical ability- he could be seen as number one.
He is an excellent crosser, one of the best in the history of the Premier League – and has played some insane passes. He can create goals, and rip the goalie apart.
What sets him apart from the rest is his overall pace and physicality. He is a strong and fast player that can perform on the biggest stages in the world.
2: ROBERT LEWANDOWSKI – BAYERN MUNICH
Arguably, the most in-form player in the world right now is Lewandowski – and he has been for some time. It seems absurd that he hasn’t received the Ballon d’Or just yet.
This Polish player is well-balanced. He has strength, pace and technical skills – with a beautiful movement in the box. He always finds himself in the perfect position – and he is the one player you would trust in a one-on-one situation.
Although it’s not all about stats, there are some great Lewandowski numbers to take into consideration. Across the 357 games he has played for Bayern Munich he has scored 328 goals. This includes 41 Bundesliga goals from just 29 games in the 2020-21 season. He also averages more than one goal per game this season as well.
1: LIONEL MESSI – PSG
Where is Ronaldo? How can Messi be number 1 if Ronaldo hasn’t made it to the top 5? Well, Messi hasn’t really set the pitch alight in PSG this season – but he has been dominant for the past 15 years which cannot be overlooked.
Messi and Ronaldo will go down in history as two of the greatest players in the history of the sport – alongside names such as Maradona. And, although Ronaldo seems to be minimising his role now, Messi is still excellent, despite his questionable form right now.
Messi is the current holder of the Ballon d’Or after having had a superb season in Barcelona and leading Argentina to a trophy – so, we can never overlook his talent.
However, if he doesn’t pick up the pace by the end of the season, he will likely drop down the list… so he’s number one – for now.

For now, Messi is the undisputed king of football – although he hasn’t proven it so far at PSG. However, there are some superb players waiting in the wings to take his spot should he fall from grace.
